Basic Info
Name:Mei Chan
Bio
canon character/series: Mei Chan/Fullmetal Alchemist (manga only)
name: Mei Chan
age: 16
gender: Female
race/ethnicity: Human/Xingese (Chinese-Japanese subculture thing, AU-ly.)
sexuality: Straight, although it’s not really the first thing on her mind. (Besides, she seems to have feelings already for someone else. ♥)
crew position: Surgeon/cook of the Hajimaru
appearance: Mei is of a slight, slim build, not very tall, only about 5’5”. Her skin is a pale coloration, and although her dark brown eyes are somewhat wide, they still have the slant of her ancestry to them. Her hair is jet black and reaches to nearly the middle of her back, however is tied up in a tight bun—or pair of tight buns nicknamed meatballs, but adapts to a single bun for her crew choice—with thin braids hanging down from it. She has very short bangs across her forehead, stopping their longest at her eyebrows. She has a somewhat round face, though it’s slightly angled out in her teenage years. Mei’s face is cute, growing close towards pretty as she grows up. She wears clothing that goes back to her roots, often with Mandarin collars and ornate patterns in satin cloth. She prefers brighter colors that result in her standing out, although she doesn’t concern herself with it. She wears Chinese flats as shoes, black generally with designs. She can be found wearing layers occasionally if the weather serves for it, usually of the Chinese winter variety in robes and cloaks. For pants, they are usually somewhat baggy to provide free movement, and she wears sashes around her waist and across her chest.

Xiao-Mei, her panda companion, can constantly be found with her, and is the size of a young panda cub with white base fur, black panda points—around the eyes, forelegs/arms, legs, tail, and ears—with dark, practically black brown eyes. Mei will sometimes put accessories to match her own clothes to the panda, although not often. Xiao-Mei is actually older than physically appearing.
personality: What one can say about Mei is that she is constantly cheerful and helpful, trying to often look on the bright side of things. The smile seems to be a near permanent expression across her face, although if displeased, she easily switches moods. She’s actually rather easily displeased, it seems, especially if someone appears to be in trouble and has no means of defending themselves She tries to help people like her, those who are the bottom of the chain, and is determined to find her way up from the bottom. How she understands people like that will be explained in detail later. Usually appearing to be calm, Mei harbors a lot of responsibilities inside her that belong to the Chan clan, and is actually very serious inside despite her childish acts on the outside. She is young, she knows this, and generally acts it outwardly as she should. Although on a quest, she knows she must live her life to the fullest while she still can. It is interesting that one so young—even six years ago she knew this—is not afraid to die fighting. Refusing to give up on anything, one can call the girl stubborn as bloody hell, unwilling to give anything up even if there is no hope left. She’s got herself a fighter’s spirit, even at this young of an age.

Xiao-Mei only permits Mei to carry or pet her, although has made a few exceptions. She is grouchy, irritable, and uses her sharp teeth easily on someone if she feels displeased. Which is quite often, sad to say.
abilities/weaponry: Mei’s main ability is that of alchemy. However, it is called "Rentanjutsu" in her and is performed slightly differently than normal alchemy. Although, alchemy to her is more magic-science than science-science. She has the arrays, 'formula circles' to her, and can rebuild pretty much anything by using them. She creates them either by drawing them with chalk/paint/on paper, or by throwing knives that she creates two circles with, one in the intended location where she wants the alchemy to happen, and one around her that transfers to the other. She can also use these throwing knives as actual weapons, and knows a great deal of martial arts despite her ranking in the Xing Empire. Also being quick-footed, light and agile, seems to be beneficial to her in any fighting instances. She’s actually surprisingly strong for her size, as well.
She can sense someone's ki, or their "soul," and can tell if there are multiple or none. Strong ki terrifies her and nearly paralizes her, while no ki confuses her.

Xiao-Mei sometimes emulates Mei, however, is a very good biter and is hard to detach once she latches onto you with her teeth.
weaknesses: Mei is simply a human, despite her abilities and a slight durability with attacks and getting thrown around. Cut her, and she will bleed like any normal human would. Although she can heal it with alchemy, the art of alchemy technically must be exact, or else it will not work, or something will go wrong. Even the slightest mistake can cause a problem. She's a girl, and can easily be out-done by a man if her expertise in alchemy/fighting does not help her against them. She's also somewhat frail, despite her strong confidence. Put enough pressure and she'll break easily. There's also the fact she's still a child; some things may easily be lost on her, and she's somewhat gullible. She doesn't understand American/English-speaking customs very easily, and could be tricked with that as well or taken advantage of. Her confidence is a bit of a problem as well; it can easily drag her down if she thinks she can win something easily and is wrong. She doesn’t like getting judged as weak, and will become angry, if only to end up weak because of her anger.
history: Mei Chan was born in the small country of Xing, an out-cropping of Japan and China. It had both of the countries' customs, but the Japanese language and the Chinese wardrobe and a bit more of their customs. Her clan in the hierarchy is the lowest, she being the daughter of the clan leader's daughter and the emperor of Xing. However, she is not the only child of the emperor. There are many, many other clans in Xing, and each of them, Mei has a half sibling in. One could say she's got a pretty big family. Sadly, being the smallest clan, the Chan clan doesn't get much recognition in the ranks, and often is ignored or left out of the loop. It is one of the things that makes Mei so understanding of others and their plights. Although this was not the greatest position to grow up in, Mei made the best of it she could. It wasn't exactly a place for a princess to grow up.

Around the same time of her father's illness that suddenly struck him down in his prime, when she was ten, Mei Chan came across a baby panda. It was much smaller than her, and all alone. Mei decided that she would do her best for the panda, for she was just like the girl, and named her Xiao-Mei. Shortly afterwards she found that the emperor was likely to die, and his children--the many of them--were to figure out who was going to be the next leader of Xing. With this in mind, most of the princes and princesses began itching for a clan war. Mei and her clan, being too small compared to the others, really would have no chance in this. So she fled, looking for the way to immortality. If she could come back with at least something, her father's will would at least rise enough for him to die happy, and her to have a closer seat to the throne to help out her clan.

On her adventure, she has met many an alchemist and persons, learned many a thing, and escaped from peril and death on multiple occasions with Xiao-Mei at her side. A few different instances stand out in her mind the most, like her meeting with a scarred man who seemed to have a pity towards the plight of her small clan. She remembers him, as well as strange people with multiple souls. She has heard of one way to immortality, called the Philosopher's Stone, and hopes to attain it for her clan. With this in mind, she decided that perhaps a pirate may come across it--don't they get treasure anyways?--so decided maybe a pirate crew would be best. One has to wonder if the Hajimaru was the best choice, considering Kai Wokou's choice in crew. But Mei found he was apparently gender retarded, so is safe. For now.
